We've done the three "ains" of the European Poker Tour--Ukraine, Spain and Great Britain--and now here were are already in Poland. It's event four of season six of the EPT, and if past history is anything to go by, we're in for a Warsaw whip.
Typically the fields here are smaller than the monsters that have grown in both London and Barcelona, but the competition is no less fierce. Last season, the final table was among the most star-studded we've seen: the Team PokerStars Pro duo of Dario Minieri and Arnaud Mattern, alongside the other European stalwarts Ludovic Lacay and Andrea Benelli.
Warsaw also played host to the apex of the startling EPT debut season of Joao Barbosa, the Portuguese player who took down first prize for the largest of his extraordinary seven cashes. Early indications suggest that all of those are back this term, taking their seats either today or tomorrow for the staggered day ones.
We're slightly earlier in the calendar year--mid-October instead of mid-November--and the temperature has plunged only to the sub-10s, rather than the sub-zeros. That permitted a brisk stroll this morning through the city streets and landscaped parks, with eyeball happily unfrozen.
It's a terrific city out there, but stay with us as we ignore it for the coming week. Our focus is the action occurring in the casino of the Hyatt Regency Hotel: day 1a today, day 1b tomorrow, all the way through to a final table on Sunday.
