World Champions Italy are on their way home after losing to Slovakia ? a defeat which meant they finished below New Zealand in their group. Where did all go wrong?

The most entertaining game of the day though was Japan's 3-1 win over Denmark. The Guardian's Tokyo correspondent Justin McCurry tells us how the result went down back home, and why the Blue Samurai are now a good bet for the semi-finals.

Finally, Sid Lowe looks ahead to Spain's must-win game against Chile tomorrow night, and keeps his fingers crossed that Switzerland don't ruin it all.
